About towlimits

towlimits is a small, independent site of free towing calculators for Australia. It is built and maintained by Muhammad Afzal, a web and conversion specialist who spends his working days making websites clearer and easier to use.

It exists because towing limits are easy to misread. A vehicle can be rated to tow 3,500 kg and still be over its limits towing much less, once the GCM, GVM and towball download are counted. The figures are all on the compliance plates, but working out what they mean together takes arithmetic most people only do once they're already at the weighbridge. These calculators do it in advance and show their working.

How the information is kept accurate

  • Every rule on the site comes from an official source, mainly Vehicle Standards Bulletin 1 and state transport authority guidance. Each calculator lists its sources, and all of them are on the rules, sources and method page with the date we last checked them.
  • Every formula is published. Each calculation is tested automatically against the worked examples on its page whenever the site is updated.
  • If you find a mistake or an out-of-date rule, please get in touch. Corrections are made quickly.

What towlimits is not

It isn't legal advice, an engineering certificate or a substitute for weighing your rig. We aren't a transport authority, a vehicle engineer or a towing business. Your vehicle's and trailer's own plates and manuals set your limits, and your state transport authority has the final word on its rules.

Independence

towlimits isn't sponsored by any vehicle, caravan, towbar or accessory brand. If the site later carries advertising or affiliate links, they'll be disclosed on the pages where they appear and in the privacy policy.
