Toyota HiLux towing capacity, GVM, GCM and payload (2026)

Every variant's published towing and mass figures, plus what they mean once you hitch up.

Short answerEvery Toyota HiLux variant listed has a braked towing capacity of 2,900 to 3,500 kg, a GCM of 5,800 to 6,300 kg and a GVM of 2,950 to 3,500 kg, according to Toyota's September 2026 specifications. Payload is 778 to 1,558 kg before towing. Tow the full braked capacity and, once the GCM and a 10% towball download are counted, only 428 to 970 kg is left for accessories, people and gear.

* What the vehicle can carry above its kerb weight while towing its full braked capacity: the lower of GCM minus braked towing, and GVM minus a 10% towball download, minus kerb weight. Figures copied 12 October 2026.

Worked example: Toyota HiLux SR5, 4x4, Double-Cab Pick-Up, 2.8L turbo-diesel with V-Active (48V), automatic

The Toyota HiLux SR5, 4x4, Double-Cab Pick-Up, 2.8L turbo-diesel with V-Active (48V), automatic weighs 2,155 kg at kerb, has a 3,120 kg GVM and a 6,300 kg GCM, and is rated to tow 3,500 kg braked.

  • GCM: to tow 3,500 kg, the loaded vehicle can weigh no more than 6,300 − 3,500 = 2,800 kg.
  • GVM: with 350 kg on the towball (10% of the trailer), the vehicle can weigh no more than 3,120 − 350 = 2,770 kg before hitching.
  • The lower figure, 2,770 kg, leaves 615 kg above kerb weight for the towbar, accessories, passengers and gear.

GVM plus braked towing is 3,120 + 3,500 = 6,620 kg, which is 320 kg more than the GCM. You can't load this variant to its GVM and tow its full rating at the same time.

How much it can tow as you load it

Added to kerb weightLoaded vehicleHeaviest trailer
300 kg2,455 kg3,500 kg
500 kg2,655 kg3,500 kg
700 kg2,855 kg2,650 kg
900 kg3,055 kg650 kg

The heaviest trailer is the lowest of the braked towing capacity, GCM minus the loaded vehicle, and the GVM room left divided by a 10% towball download. Use how much can I tow with your own weights and towball percentage.

23 of the 25 variants listed have a GVM plus towing capacity higher than their GCM. Our guide on why a 3,500 kg towing capacity often isn't 3,500 kg explains what that means.

Notes from Toyota

  • Toyota lists maximum kerb weights and describes all weights as approximate and subject to individual vehicle variances.
  • Toyota's HiLux spec sheet doesn't list the maximum towball download. Check your owner's manual.
  • Some grades offer a factory GVM upgrade to 3,500 kg. The GCM stays at 6,300 kg, so the upgrade adds carrying capacity but not towing capacity.
  • The battery electric HiLux has a lower braked towing capacity and isn't included here.

Common questions

What is the Toyota HiLux's towing capacity?
Toyota lists a braked towing capacity of 2,900 to 3,500 kg across the variants on this page. The real limit for your vehicle also depends on its GCM and how heavily it's loaded.
What is the Toyota HiLux's GCM?
